---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the Bear’s Paw First Newsletter of the season.  We’re going to be trying to put one of these out every couple of weeks or so.  Things change fast in Wells this time of year, with events popping up quicker than changes in the weather, but anyway, here goes number 1!

JUNE 24 @ 8 pm.

OUT OF ALBA

This 5 piece Celtic Band will be playing an outdoor concert on ‘Casino street’, right beside us.  We’re putting up a stage, turning the street into a dance floor and lounging around our large licensed patio area for a Summer Season Opener.  Outdoor BBQ!  Burger and a Band for only $15

MUSIC EVENTS at THE PAW

Clear the calendar!

June 22 – HER SWEET TIME Two girls from Victoria with a sweet sound, beautiful vocal and instrumental harmonies!  Indoors at the Paw, starting at 8 pm. Visit www.hersweettime.com and listen to a sample.  Then call us and reserve a table for dinner at 7!  By Donation…(the band, not the dinner!)

June 24 – OUT OF ALBAAs you see it written, so shall it be (Please read the notice above).  This is our first outdoor concert ever.  Lots of RV parking in Wells, great hotels, motels and B&B’s.  These guys will be playing traditional tunes on the street in Barkerville on the next day too, so you can catch the Barkerville scene before you head home on Sunday.

July 2 – MURRAY BOALThe singing organic farmer!  Murray is a Cariboo Chilcotin icon, and I’m going to make sure he gets radical while he’s here, and force him to play “Company Town”.  This concert will be great ‘cause he’s going to drag our bus-boy out of the kitchen for an old school revival! Visit www.murrayboal.com

July 11 – MR. SOMETHING SOMETHINGfrom Toronto!  6 piece Afro beat/jazz.  Outdoors again,  ‘cause no walls could contain them! Featuring a variety of African percussion instruments combined with sax’s, bass, and guitars.  This is music like you’ve never heard it before. “an infectious blend of percolating polyrhythms, layered horn punches and hot-stepping basslines.” Check out the unique sound at http://www.mrsomethingsomething.com/music.htm and then call us to reserve a spot for a show you will not want to miss

HIKES – PAST AND FUTURE

7 Summits in 7 Days.

It’s on again.  Climb any 7 of 8 specific day hikes sometime this summer, collect the token in the summit cairn, stop in at the café for your free token holder/key chain, give us a picture for our wall of fame.  Collect 7 tokens and get the GRAND PRIZE, (or is that a token prize), Delicious piece of Cranberry Carrot Cake and a cup of tea of your choice!  This year we’re putting together a September Bike and hike race….7 summits in one day!  Stay tuned for developments; the professional division is not for the faint of heart! More pics at the un-updated, and slightly inaccurate website www.whitegold.ca/7summits.htm

Double Double Espresso – On June 6th. Two People, Two Mountains, and an express hike to get done before work!  Cheryl and Dave hiked up Slide, across to Murray for a leisurely lunch, and back to the Café in time to clean up, prep and open by 4:30.  Great trip, no snow unless you wanted it and the trails are in excellent shape.

Mount Agnes – Watch out, as Sunday it still has lots of deep snow starting way down, just above Coopers cabin.  There are a lot of north facing slopes there so it’ll be a while before it’s a dry hike.(but good for bagging a late season ski!)  Burdett is similar, but all other mountains look good to me!!

Taking Care

Please take care in the mountains.  We will have a log at the café soon, so you can log in and out on your way through.  Take sturdy shoes or good hikers, Always have a warm hat, and rain gear, regardless of the weather(it’ll help with the emergency bivouac!), and count on being chilly at the summit.

WILDLIFE

Lots of Bear Sightings this year.  There is a sow and 3 one-year-old cubs hanging out around the Bowron road!  I saw a beautiful photo of an adult male Cariboo, taken just at the Stanley road last week, and of course, there is the usual plethora of Moose and Deer grazing the entire length of Hwy 26, especially in mornings and evenings.  An amateur wildlife photographer reported seeing a cougar on the road, near the Yellowhawk trail on Monday!

CAFÉ NEWS

What great staff we have this year!  Thanks to Cassandra for keeping the food rolling out of the kitchen, and we’ve got a great staff of experienced servers working the tables for you.  Some of you will be coming out just to watch Bob Campbell work!  Bob is a Quesnel music mainstay, who’s been out of the region for a while, but love has brought him back into the fold.  His infamy precedes him, as I have people stopping me on the street in Quesnel telling ME that he’s coming back!  I’m sure were going to have a few great impromptu’s at the café this year because every single person working here plays something!

MENU CHANGES

More Beers and Wines, including some new incredible beers from Quebec (by special order), Organic Okanogan VQA’s, and whites and reds from around the world.

Summit Platter – Dave makes this no yeast mountain bread and we serve it with great tasting cheeses, sliced meats and pickles, and a secret ingredient you gotta come here to see.  We even brought in a particular New Zealand wine to have with this because the flavours are so outrageously complimentary, but it also stars with Maudite!

Espresso’s are back…Have you ever had your Espresso ‘corrected’ (corretto).  Apparently, it’s a popular Italian breakfast drink, and it’s Espresso with Grappa (or 40 proof grape Nitro!)  Makes a great apertif!

Come for Dinner.  We have lots of people coming to the café now, just for a night out.  And why not?  It’s a pleasant drive from Quesnel, through beautiful, mostly undeveloped scenery, teeming with wildlife, and a great meal waiting at the end of the road.  The other increase we’re seeing is people coming up from Williams Lake or Prince George, just to stay the night at the Wells Hotel, or one of the B&B’s, and have a nice retreat for the weekend.  Some do Barkerville, but lots are finding other reasons to be here like knocking off a day hike, walking the galleries in Wells, or taking in a special event

Everyone gets a charge out of the café, and so do we!  Most of the time we’re a great source for Bowron Lake or Cariboo Mountain information, Special Events in Barkerville, or Wells, cool spots worth driving or cycling to, or just about anything else.

OTHER EVENTS YOU SHOULD TELL PEOPLE ABOUT

call us or them for more info.

JUNE 15 – Rae Spoon and Ivan Coyote at IMA.  Rae is powerhouse young country/folk musician and Ivan Coyote is 100% a very powerful artist and wordsmith!!  Joined by filmmaker Amy Lynn Kazymerchyk on a multi-media extravaganza….This is going to be SO good, we’re closing the café early so we can see it too!! And only $7!

June 16 – Wendy Young – glass artist – opening talk at IMA

June 17 – Theatre Royal Gala Opening – 3 new shows released on stage in Barkerville, and a dinner and dance (Milburn Mountain Boys) at the Wells Community Hall.  $30 (cheap!)  Theater Royal is going to knock your socks off this year with a high-energy staff and 5 new shows by the time Summer arrives!  I have it from an inside source that the Cariboo Amatuer Dramatic Association performance is over the top talented.  If you can’t make the opening, you MUST check out the shows this season.

JulyLots stayed tuned for the next newsletter - stuff in Barkerville, plus a full slate at the newly renovated Sunset Theatre in Wells, IMA stuff, and Artswells at the beginning of August( over 40 different acts performing that weekend!), organized by Island Mountain Arts www.imarts.com

Call us: locally at 994-2345, or toll free at 1-866-994-2345 to make a dinner reservation for one of our music nights.  Or to get your tickets for the Burger and a Band – OUT of ALBA - Streeling on the Street June 24!
